3rd Annual - Sylvester Davis Memorial Football Tournament

Sylvester Davis was a Tallahassee native and graduate of Rickards High School. In high school he earned the honors of 1st Team All-State as a freshman, and he a was also on the track team. He went on to graduate in 1991 and thereafter he attended a junior college in Minnesota. A year later he transferred to a junior college in Mississippi. Sylvester later came back home to play for Florida A&M University (FAMU). However, a slightly disabling car accident curtailed further aspirations of football. Nevertheless, he went forward in academics and received a degree from the special education department at FAMU, thus overcoming an almost insurmountable learning disability.

During his matriculation at FAMU, Sylvester began part-time employment with the Tallahassee Parks and Recreation Department. He became an instructor in several summer programs and eventually achieved full-time status. From there, through his passion for working with kids, especially disadvantage youth, he started a Midnight Basketball League at the Dade Street Community Center. He gave the kids something to do to stay out of trouble and mentored them. Davis was a well-known and respected figure by youth and adults at the Dade Street Community Center.

In October 2005, Sylvester's life was ended suddenly and tragically by way of murder. As of this write up, the circumstances surrounding his murder are unknown.

I was approached by his cousin, Karl Slater and his best friend, Sam Carter to host a tournament in his honor in April 2006, which the funds in turn go to the youth in the Big Bend Area, in spirit of what the late Davis did for youth.

This tournament has been a no nonesense small fee ($155.00) tournament for the first 2 years and we expect the same this year. This is not the large money tournament many out of town teams are accustomed to, however, we ask that out of town teams take time out to come to Tallahassee and participate in a feel good event. ALL PROFITS, NOT PART, will go to benefit the youth in Tallahassee and the Big Bend Area in the spirit of what Sylvester gave to the youth when he was alive.

3rd Annual - Sylvester Davis - Memorial - 2008

Summer Youth Football Camps
Minimize

Our program goals are to develop and maintain a properly supervised summer youth football program for inner city youth, to improve our communities by demonstrating an interest in our youth, to encourage physical and mental growth through competition, and to emphasize citizenship, academics and good sportsmanship.

Our goal is to eliminate the number of youth that fail high school, or not go to college, by setting examples and making them aware of the possibilities beyond high school through athletics.
